Local find for me. Picked up this named 83rd Division medal group, officially engraved silver and bronze stars. Interestingly found online an article in the division newspaper about what he must have done to earn the silver star, which was in the battle of the bulge. Also in his unit history it says he was recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross and it was pending at that time so for whatever reason it was reduced. I couldn’t find the citation for the silver star but the newspaper article at least gives an idea. He also served in Korea and received three Purple Hearts between both wars and judging by the extras in the grouping he must have been a police officer at some point after the war.  
 

His citation for his Silver Star is in Headquarters, 83rd Infantry Division, General Orders No. 228.

Thanks for the comments, and very nice find digging up those newspaper articles, they really help fill in the actions that led to his silver star.  Strange in the battalion history it has him listed for a pending DSC, I suppose that’s why he didn’t get his silver star until after the war after they made a decision to reduce it.
