January 5, 20224 yr #1 Was fortunate to pick up this NC group a while back. He did earn the Purple Heart in 45. Trying to tie down exactly what for. Looks as though he applied for Air Cadet school in 43. Obviously that didn’t work out! Cool group with photos! Thanks for looking!
January 9, 20224 yr #2 Nice group, I like the Anti-tank collar insignia! Not really uncommon to "wash-out" of a school of some type. It just means you aren't particularly suited for that type of job. Lots of other jobs in the military! I have a small grouping from a Navy vet, was on the USS Honolulu on Dec. 7th, '41. Later went to submarine school but washed out. In June of 1944 he was off the coast on Normandy on a Mine Sweeper! BKW
January 13, 20224 yr #3 Yeah “washout” stories may not have been recounted to the grandkids too much, but they offer unique human perspectives for the times. I have a tin can sailor grouping who started as an aviator. He wasn’t shy about telling how a particularly rough landing during training ended in him throwing his flying log from the cockpit while taxiing back and refusing to get back in any plane for the duration… I have another grouping of ephemera of a guy who washed out of sub school and apparently never saw sea duty for the entire war, spending his time at naval bases in Hawaii and Midway. You’ve never seen so many selfies in exotic locations, in “movie star” poses, often in aviator glasses…. He is so scarce in naval records online and after the war I half wonder if he entered under an assumed name…he clearly knew how to work the system…
January 13, 20224 yr #4 I washed out of a few things in life. Thanks for posting, always enjoy seeing what you turn up.
