Looking through one of my father's cruise books from 1957. 8th Marines. Spotted this and am interested in any other shots of examples of this.

It looks like it might be the experimental load bearing vest tested by the Marines in that time frame.

    Now they know for sure that the Marines were trying out new vests. The vest at the end of the thread you referenced shows another from the same book.
