I was watching band of brothers, 2nd episode and right after they take Caratan when they are ambushed by the German paratroopers and tanks you see an US airborne get wounded by machine gun fire (his first two finger blown off) he is using a 1903-A3 non sniper with peep sites. I was wondering was this issued as such to the airborne infantry?

Yes, some were issued to fire rifle grenades.
