August 6th, 1945 Major Bong was killed while flying the P80 fighter aircraft in North Hollywood, CA.    The nation lost the ace of aces of the United States.   Rest in peace.

An amazing flyer. Were all his victories in a P-38? Didn't they say he wasn't the best shot but he got so close to his victims he overcame that issue.
