I won’t go into too much detail on Mr. Nygard, as I’ve already done a bit of a write up in another post here. 
 

I actually didn’t notice this helmet in my first go-round in the house, must’ve been buried.  I thankfully took another look around just before the auction started and noticed it.

 

HS looks to be a double digit KW MCord, hardware was originally green but has since been repainted gold to match the rest of the helmet.

 

On it’s own, the helmet looks strange, almost like a kid made it, but when it’s next to the same gentleman’s flight helmet it matches pretty closely.

 

Aside from just wanting to share it, I’m wondering if anyone has any guess why he’d be marked as a Rear Admiral when as far as I understand he was an O5 (Commander I believe) I assume it’s probably a joke of some sort, but I can’t say I fully understand it.

 

I had a debate before buying it regarding its authenticity to military service, but reckoned it looks and feel authentic enough to take a risk on. (Didn’t cost much, for what I paid I can strip it and make out well.)

I would think this would have been a retirement or some other promotion gift.  Kind of neat actually-  I would keep it as-is and together with that other one.

Looks like the helmet was used into the 60s.

 

The black chinstrap clips help date the helmets use.

The chinstrap clips are actually green, just over painted in gold making it appear to be more black then it is.

 

 

In addition to the flight helmet and his flight jacket, I got his khaki dress cap, a portable flight notepad (sounds lame but is actually really neat) a rainproof hood that doubles as a life preserver, looking into exactly what it is, and his pair of dress white shoes.

 

I also managed to get a large amount of non military related items, including prewar literature on aviation, pre and wartime literature from the Red Cross, and probably a dozen aviation related photographs and prints.

 

And to answer your question from the other thread as to what else was there;

 

He had two leather flight jackets, not patched but definitely USN.  I tried to go for them but they ran about $90 each and I simply didn’t have the money on me, they also sold two pairs of coveralls and liners, and a pair of flight pants and suspenders.

 

The whole auction was littered with small items he had, plaques (which I tried to get but missed), USN flashlights, small momentous and the like.

 

Some of the other bigger items I missed were his headphones, (must’ve been summer ones or something, giant foam earcoverings, khaki.) a pair of blue headphones which I’ve come to realize were USN.  I also spotted another visor cap, in much better shape then the one I had, but that was disassembled.  I tried to go for it but misinterpreted a lady’s intent and ended up loosing it for next to nothing.

 

Hope I haven’t rambled too long, point being it was a big sale Militaria wise.

Not sure what you mean by belongs to the flight jacket, they all belonged to the same man if that’s what your wondering.

I saw one at the auction, lost track of it and it disappeared.  No idea where it went or what unit it was from, unfortunately.

Somehow forgot to respond to your post, thank you for your input and I’d agree actually.  Thanks to the help of a forum member we were able to figure out he served a career of around 22-23 years, so I’d be willing to bet the 20 signifies 20 years of service.  Definitely will be staying with the flight helmet.
