This unit was an element of Marine Aircraft Group 23, part of Third Marine Aircraft Wing. MAG-23 moved in eschelons from Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal, British Solomons. It saw action in the defense of Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Aug 1942-Oct 1942. Service included the Pacific theater, including Midway and Guadacanal.
