OK, let's try a thread on what was the best edged weapon you picked up this year. Was it an identified sword? How about a minty bayonet? Perhaps it was a well used fighting knife?

 

Perhaps one of the best swords I picked up this year was a Philippine Commonwealth Army Model 1902 Officer Sabre. It also helps that I was able to buy it at a very reasonable price.

 

The Philippine Commonwealth Army only existed from circa 1935 - 1947. The Philippine Army was established to prepare the islands for independence from the United States and was commanded by General Field Marshal Douglas MacArthur when the US entered World War II on December 7, 1941. Most units of the Philippine Army were nationalized and became a part of the US Armed Forces Far East Command in 1941. The sword gives the outward appearance of the standard US Army Model 1902 Officer Sabre.

 

The blade is quite different in that the etching boldly proclaims this to be a "Philippine Army" sword. The blade does not contain the normally seen "US" or the Great Seal in the form of an eagle.

 

The blade does contain the seal of the Commonwealth of the Philippines.

 

The blade also contains a rendition of the US flag to indicate that the Philippines still remain a US possession and that the Philippine Army is a component of the US Army.

 

 

A very scarce sword from an army that fought bravely on Bataan and Corregedor in the first days of World War II.

My best pickup was a Boker M-3 from the original owner with letter and photo of him in WW2 with the blade.

Probably my best and only knife pick-up of this year was a Marine Ka-Bar knife. I just bought it today and will be receiving the background information on his father who owned it during WWII.

Easily my best edged weapon find this year was this M1880 hunting knife, in a Type III scabbard (per Cole, Book 3). Based on the serial number and brass guard, I think it was made in 1884 or 1884.

 

I've wanted one of these knives for a long time, and finally found this one which tickled my fancy...though I'm trying not to let it draw me into 19th Cent. items, and just let it be a (nearly) stand alone item in my collection.

 

The scabbard was originally made by Watervliet, but modified at RIA.

 

Here's my best edged aquisition of 2008... A PAL MOD Marked Oneida Limited M1905E1(M1), dated 1943. Bayo is marked OL/1943 on the Ricasso with PAL-MOD on the reverse Ricasso, and has a rounded fuller that extends to the tip. $80 on Ebay.

My only blade find of this year,

This is a Collins No. 18 Survival Knife/Machete with the green horn handle that I picked up this year. I purchased the knife at a Goodwill Store silent auction. I paid $200.00 for the lot that included a pile of nice new lock blade knives and new machetes and odd and ends. I sold some of the other knives and got most of my money back and I still have a few more items to sell. As far as the knife is concerned I am pretty sure it is original but there is no evidence that I can see that this is one of the 1000 Raider knives. Now, hopefully I can find a reasonably priced scabbard to go with the knife. I also purchased a very nice German saw back butcher blade bayonet this year but I know I can't show any photos of it on the forum. Thanks!

I bought it on a whim at an antique shop

The tang with the hole and the ring caught my attention

I got it home and found out it was a WWII era knife

Plus..It has a bottle opener too!!!

 

 

Anyone got an extra E.G Waterman sheath lying around?...Hehheheheheh

 

Runner up is my Ka-Bar "Commando" knife

I didn't even realize it was a shorter version until I got it and did some research

I guess I should pay more attention to the specs/measurements

 

I also picked up a Robeson WWII era knife, some M7 bayonets, a Camillus folding pilots machete (Courtesy of Doughboy!!) and a Spanish CETME bayonet, for good measure.....

This is not my most valuable pickup this year but it means the most to me. It's a OKC-3S. It was given to me by a Marine who I taught in Bible class years ago. He knows I collect Marine edge weapons and gave me his when he came home from Iraq. Bill

My best find for 2008 was this pristine 1906 now to find the 1872 in same condition that I can afford!!

 

The best one I bought this yearwas this Bayonet used through at least 1942 in the Pacific.

 

The best one I sold in 2008 was an Austrian M1870 Short Sword Bayonet that brought about $300!

I believe my best us finds this year were a Tiffany Civil War Presetation Sword,and an inlisted civil war Calvery Sabre with the mans name and unit on the blade. Both of these were from familys of the men who owned them.

My best edged weapon find wasn't US this year. Although I got a nice M1840 cavalry sword with scabbard earlier, I managed to get a beautiful WWII Japanese field grade officers katana. It is handmade and signed. Not a factory piece. I don't want to get in trouble for posting a non-US piece, but it is my best find of 08.

I have been looking for an M3 Camillus knife ALL dang year, and finally found and purchased one, the day before christmas couldn't believe my luck. Will get pics when it gets here! Still need a garand bayonet, that's this years' search

Best find was a M1880 Hunting Knife, steel guard, first year of production of which only a 1000 or so were made. Always wanted one of these, and found this one in an estate sale basement with some other "western themed" items. The metal was painted black, and the wood grip had some putty embedded from obvious previous service as a putty knife. But at $5 I just couldn't pass it up. And of course I was doubly pleased when the paint came off revealing a steel guard rather than the more common brass.

I made a replica sheath to fit it, but need the brass throat mount should anyone know of a source.

A Case V-42 with the issue scabbard. It is not named to anyone, but it is a geniune Case. It came in a t a local gun show. The guy had no idea what it was. A friend got it, and I traded for it.

Picked this up sometime back in the fall at a gun show for $65.00

 

The deal I got on that is what makes it my best find of the year. Otherwise it would have been my M.1905 with 1910 scabbard. Although. I got a heck of a deal on that one too for $125.00
