Recently I was sent this by a friend, I was after a case xx knife and he very kindly sent me this. Its a fine blade and leather sheath, but can anyone help with the handle.

Its not got its original handle, but instead had this incredibly well made handle added. The thing is solid ! And extremely well made.

 

Leather wraps on the handle and looks like steel marked with the flaming bomb and US

 

Has anyone ever seen one of these before

As you know, it's a re-handled Case 9-inch machete, when it was done, who knows. The US and flaming bomb are completely bogus though, in my opinion. That then does not favor well for this frankenstien machete.

The sheath looks to be correct with an added handle keeper which seems to be off a cavalry picket pin pouch or something alike.

Interesting Dustin as its done so well , I agree with the flaming bomb and marking as they dont seem deep enough for a government stamp.

Being well done I think bares no relevance. Anyone with a little know-how can put a new handle on. There are multiple members here that restore knives and fabricate new handles all the time and they are "done so well" as you put it.

With serif US and ordnance bomb, this knife is now categorized as a Fantasy piece.

The handle was done at an unknown time/era and anyone could have done it thats handy with replacing/repairing handles.

And to boot the stamping in your opinion is a fabrication and not a stamp by the US government.

 

Also with regards to something being so well done anyone with some machinery and a little knowledge of metalwork could do this.

 

I think that about wraps that up, such a shame its been cannibalised

 

Once again Ta for your opinion, I knew once the handle was messed with this would not be at all desirable but wanted to see if anyone else had a rehandled blade with the same handle maybe.

Dean, I know zip about the knife in question, but just thought perhaps what I would look into if it were mine might be helpful to you. Why don't you contact one of the people on here who does that kind of work and inquire if they can remove the handle that's on it now and replace it with an original style handle?

 

Unless it has sentimental value as it is (you say it was gifted by a friend) you'd then have a re-handled original knife rather than a fantasy piece.

I know there are reproductions made, and there are people who will make a sheath to order. I had one made for my Randall knife that, if not for the stamping, would pass muster. But at $55 it was a lot cheaper than an original.

Be interested in comments on the sheath.

It's a neat knife as it stands. Without provenance accompanying it, it's not much more than a curiosity. Certainly there were a number of exceptional knife makers in business in Great Britain during the War making knifes for sale and very able to execute a high quality repair or modification like this.

IMHO, I'd enjoy it for what it is. Even if we don't know the entire story.

I dont have another to compare but the rivets are brass and the alteration of the leather keeper being added has been done well.
