NAVAL AND MILITARY ORDER OF THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

 

A society for volunteer and regular commissioned officers of the Spanish-American War, this badge is one of the more exotic society symbols. This must have been a costly badge in its time. The only version I have acquired has several flaws. Beside the poor quality of the ribbon, one claw foot of the eagle is missing. This version appears to be gold gilt over silver. It has a hand engraved number on the viewer's right side of the upper cross arm. No record of these numbers is currently known to exist.

 

Photo Two has a close up of the center medallions of the badge. Additionally, there is an image of the Hereditary Member's badge which resembles a standard convention badge. Bishop and Elliott report the society existing into the 1960s. This is entirely possible with a die-hard core of members who would be in their late seventies or early eighties by that decade.

Wow, this is such a great looking badge. I could only ever dream to own one like this. Mr. Lane, yours is incredibly low in number!

In 1904 and 1908 the New York and Connecticut Commanderies published rosters of members, both of which list the membership/badge number. I've been able to attributed a couple of badges using these rosters.

Here is an example of the Naval and Military Order of the Spanish - American War membership medal in silver-gilt, that I found on ebay several months ago. The number "1815" is engraved on the edge of the upper cross arm to the viewer's right. Any help attributing this medal would be appreciated. Please excuse my poor photography.
