Was Yogi awarded a Purple Heart? NY Times said he was, but, I haven't found any other mention of it. Not even at the Yogi museum. His service on D-Day is amazing as was his baseball career. As the Bronx NY native that I am....RIP Yogi.

He was promoted to the Yankees' Kansas City farm team in 1943 but joined the Navy instead and served as a gunner's mate during the D-day invasion of Normandy. During the fighting, it's said, he earned a Purple Heart but refused to accept it because he didn't want to alarm his mother.

A GREAT man and unbelievable Ball player-- always surprised at how under appreciated he is for his play:

 

• From 1950 through 1956 Berra won 3 MVP awards, finished second twice, and third & fourth once each.
• From 1950 through 1956 Berra hit 191 home runs and struck out only 166 times. In the history of baseball, 68 times players have had a single season in which they struck out at least 166 times. From 2000 - 2010, 40 times players have had a single season in which they struck out at least 166 times.
• For his career Berra hit 358 home runs and struck out only 414 times. In contrast, Mark Reynolds stuck out 434 times in 2009 - 2010.
• In 1950 after striking out twice in a game against Dick Littlefield, Berra did not strike out again for three weeks. He did not strike out twice in a game again for more than a year.
• In the prime of his career (1950 - 1956), Berra started both games of a doubleheader 117 times.
• Seven times in that same seven year period, Berra started both games of a doubleheader on consecutive days.
• In Berra's 17 seasons the Yankees got to the World Series (WS) 14 times.
• The Cardinals, the 2nd most successful franchise in MLB, have appeared in 17 WS.
• Berra was on 10 WS winning teams, more than any other player.
• From 1957 through 1981 New Yorkbaseball teams appeared in 13 WS. Berra appeared in every one of them as a player, coach, or manager.
• Berra appeared in a total of 21 WS.
