Hey guys...

so i just got back from a local auction i always attend with my father and found this navy helmet for a decent price of 55 dollars. I dont know much about them besides it is a WW2 NAVY TALKER HELMET....did i get this for a steal?or is this a good price for one of these i usually dont go for Navy items but this helmet just hoped into my lap and reminded me of the movie space balls with Rick Moranis and the big darth vader helmet. Can anyone give me information on these..such as were they personal head gear or used by anyone on the ships and things like that...well thanks guys....

Nice helmet.These use to be fairly common but not anymore.I have had about a dozen of them over the years.Appears yours has a re-coat of a light grey paint over the blue.Fairly common as the helmets were refurbed a lot over the years.

 

I think you have a nice piece

 

One of the dealers I know gets around $25 for a chin cup set for these.

now you have one you will be surprised how many you see in films and documentaries showing US WW2 ships during battles, i hadnt seen one until i joined this site, now i see them all the time on the history channel.

The Navy was in the process of phasing these things out when I retired. That was nine years ago. They were getting a Kevlar version, not as "Darth Vader" looking, a bit smaller in profile so it was easier to balance on your head. The good thing was that when new, the Kevlar ones come with a set of sticky pads for the inside. That way the user can custom fit them to their heads. The bad thing is that they come with a set of sticky pads so the user can custom fit them to their heads. It is fine as long as it is the same guy using the helmet each time. This is not always the case. Also, the sticky would come loose if exposed to the weather too much or the pads get knocked out or rolled up when the helmets were stacked. I;m sure it was a good idea in the lab. By the way, the new ones come Army green (what ever shade that is) out of the box brand new and have nylon webing shin straps.

 

Personally I hated the old steal talker helmets. They were heave and bulky. The padding was generally hard and never seemed to fit my head well pushing in with the front edge into my forehead. The fabric covering usually was worn off, so there was usually bare rubber on your head too. They always seemed to also push the head phones down onto the top of your head. Just an uncomfortable beast to wear. The new ones wern't much better, just not as bulky.

thanks for the infoe guys....so if they were stil makeing these helmets up to 9 years ago is it posible to put a dat on this helmet by the images you all can see. I was hopeeing this was ww2 era helmet.

Yes, that is a WW2 era helmet. Not positive but I don't think any were made post-war. What sigsaye was referring to with the 9 years comment was that they were leaving the inventory at that time, after half a century of use.
