SOS Find for Twelve O'Clock High Fans

One of my SOS finds, this small lot belonged to LTG Frank A-rm-strong, who was the real life inspiration for General Frank Savage portrayed by Gregory Peck in the movie "Twelve O'Clock High." Being one of my favorite movies, the connection tho this really speaks to me.

In my research of him, I found that he personally led the first daylight heavy bomber raid made by the USAAF over occupied Europe on August 17, 1942, earning several US Awards and being the first US officer to receive the British Distinguished Flying Cross. Of note, his pilot (Armstrong was not yet rated for a B-17 so he was the Co-pilot) was Paul W. Tibbets. Late in the war he was in competition with Tibbets to drop the first Atomic bomb, but was not selected due to his age and an old injury.

LTG Frank A-rm-strong also led the LAST US heavy bombing mission of the war over Japan, so he had the distinction of leading the first and last US raids of WWII!
