Thanks for input, absolutely makes sense..

Nice knife but it is not factory done. Most likely as pointed out above it is a field repair. After the 1st generation knives KABAR moved to the thick pommel knife and kept the round peened tang type knife for a long time (year?) before switching to the thick pommel with rectangular peened tang like yours has.
