June 25, 200818 yr #1 Sorry about the pun, but I couldn't help it. This is the American Field Service uniform of Horatio Tobey Mooers. Tobey was born in Vassalboro, Maine on May 3, 1894 and died October 1, 1978 in St. Petersburg, Florida. He enlisted in the AFS in the spring of 1917 and was assigned to Section Sanitaire Unis 27 and served primarliy in the Champagne district. He also served for a time at the AFS Headquarters at 21 Rue Rayounard in Paris. After the AFS was absorbed by the US Army, Tobey returned home and enlisted in the Army in September, 1918. He was assigned to the 151st Depot Brigade until he was discharged on December 10, 1918. Tobey then entered the Foreign Service branch of the State Department, serving in various foreign posts throughout the world such as Belgium, Scotland, Portugal, Italy, France, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico and Haiti. In 1941 while enroute to Madagascar, he was captured by the Japanese in Manila and held as a POW until September 1943 when he was paroled. During his confinment by the Japanese, Mooers wrote a novel in French titled La Baie des Agnes Pleureurs which was published in 1948. In 1950 he was elected a member Associe Litteraire of the Academie des Sciences, Belle Lettres et Arts de Lyon. He also wrote many fictional and historical articles for various American and Canadian magazines and newspapers. The uniform has an "Old England" makers label and is unlined. The side-cap although original, is not part of the group and is for display purposes only. I'll post some other images of Tobey's group later.

June 26, 200818 yr #5 CdG, Have you searched his name on Ancestry? While I don't have full access right now, I did a quick search just ot see what is there. There is information on his passport application and his name show s up on some passenger ship lists. Another nice uniform!

I'm sure there has to be information some where. To recap: This man, Horatio Tobey Mooers was a diplomatic with the State Department on his way to Madagascar when he was captured by the Japanese when they took Manila.
