I have to admit, in my early days of fan appreciation I wasn't aware of some of his films, only his Rockford days and Darby's Rangers and The Great Escape, but once my interest was piqued by a personal connection the other films became very significant and equally well respected! ...and who doesn't love Julie Andrews? A great blend of talent and skills on that movie for sure!
July 24, 201412 yr #28 He served in the 5th Regimental Combat Team in Korea. When he was on the TV show Eight Simple Rules after the death of John Ritter, he played a Korean War vet. I remember one episode where he actually wore an Ike Jacket with a 5th RCT patch on it, but I don't know if it was actually his or just a stand-in. Either way, it was a cool thing to see.
July 25, 201411 yr #30 Many years ago while I was still in high school several of us decided to cut class and go out to the beach and be extras in the filming of HEALTH. Starring Lauren Bacall, Carol Burnett, and James Garner (directed by Robert Altman). In between takes we were just standing around when James Garner walks up to us and starts up a conversation. Wow, I was so thrilled that a Hollywood star was so down to earth and not full of himself that he wanted to know how we were etc, etc. Left a lasting impression on me--James Bumgarner RIP The film was a big flop............

He received two Purple Hearts in that bitter fighting.
July 25, 201411 yr #32 I had the chance to meet him too. I got some free tickets to the Hawaiian Open (Sony Open now, Golf). It was on one of the pro-am days. James Garner was playing. I was in the gallery next to him and he started up a conversation with me. He was so nice and down to earth. Very nice man.
