Wow! That is a great collection of family documents & photos!! It's also wonderful that your family has been helpful in providing them to you. My aunt has all my grandfather's WW1 items, including postcards he wrote to my grandmother while in France, and so far she won't even show them to me.

I look forward to seeing more of your collection.

Great photos! You can feel the dust and dirt! The wearing of the campaign hat makes me think that these photos were taken before they deployed overseas. The wearing of these hats was replaced with the overseas hat. In the majority of the post-war parade photos, you will normally see the men wearing the overseas hat.

thanks for this added info,unfortunalty none of the photos are captioned (i got lucky with my grandfathers WWII photos he captioned every photo!)my knowledge of WWI is very limited,ive only recently found an interest in it due to my family finding these photos etc,suposedly my cousin has his complete uniform,ive been trying to get ahold of him,well see what happens with that.

Great family history & great pics from a seldom-seen unit type.

Great Photos !!! First time I have seen a non reg tie on an officer on parade on photo 5, usually they were just plain black. Interesting!! Thanks for postin' em .

I'm brining this thread back up...I did not realize it was originally posted in 2008! Time flies I guess! I don't have much to Add about my great grandfather...I still have not asked my cousin about his uniform yet..I did find his bolo knife made by plum in 1918! 

Fast Forward 14 years after I started this thread...life's changed a bunch...got divorced from my 1st wife..lost my 22 year militaria collection in that process...stopped collecting completely for the next 10 years...then 4 years ago started collecting American WW1 & 2 items and a few ground dug civil war items.. on a much smaller scale than before..no more war rooms!! 😂😂😂 anyways got a new girlfriend...took a trip to the NC coast last month and happened to drive past Fort Fisher...we spent the afternoon walking around and it sparked a renewed interest in the civil war but also in my Family's military history...I always knew that my great grandfather Raymond Saunders who this thread is about had a grandfather Gould Saunders that fought in the union army and was wounded badly at the battle of Antietam but that's all I knew and all anyone in my Family knew ...well needless to say my day at Fort Fisher has sparked a month long digging on the intranet and prodding family for info and what I was able to come up with was pretty amazing!!😳😳

Raymond's grandfather Gould (my great great great grandfather) enlisted in the 8th Connecticut volunteer Infantry regiment company H on Sept 23rd 1861...at some point was wounded and discharged..went home...and the enlisted again in the 1st regiment Connecticut heavy artillery!! I have ordered books on booth units as well as found original regiment rosters in order to do more research but what I found online in 1 day was pretty amazing!! I have had tin type photos of him right before and right after the civil war framed and hanging in my house for years and never knew his military past besides what got passed down through family stories...

I have 2 tin type photos before and after the civil war of Gould..and was told I have more and did not realize it! Apparently my great Aunt who also ended up moving from Connecticut to North Carolina has the wartime tin type in his civil war uniform..I did not know that until the other day! The 3rd photo is from early 1900's he was in a old folks home for old civil war soldiers..I believe 90 soldiers all together lived at this home run by a church...

This is an amazing story, from the Civil War history in the family all the way through WWI.  Thanks for sharing these discoveries, and please do continue your research!  Also, I hope you are able to get the WWI uniform to go with the collection and display!
