April 19, 201412 yr #1 I couldn't tell you why but I love Navy Helmets. This thing has at least two layers of paint on it. Well rusted inside. Good "been there" look to it. The paint is a lighter shade than I have commonly seen. Any way to tell by paint color about when it was last painted?
April 20, 201412 yr #7 That is a nice helmet with a true 'salty' been there look. As for when it was last painted, there is no real way to tell. Possibly as late as the 1980s. Very nice regardless. RC
April 20, 201412 yr #8 Looks like it might be a shade called machinery gray. Just a touch lighter than Haze gray, used for painting machinery as it has some extra "Thing" in it to withstand heat. But, used to paint anything else too. I once painted the front of the superstructure of a Frigate with this stuff. did an awesome job too, my SM1 said it was really great work, very impressive. Just before he told me to go get a bucket of Haze Gray and do it again! It was sitting by the door of the paint locker, It LOOKED like haze Gray Any way, that's how a lot of stuff ends up the color it gets on a ship, what, whatever is closest to the door. As for when, any time up to the late '80s, early '90s. I would go earlier due to the leather chin strap. They didn't appear to much after the Army dropped them.
April 20, 201412 yr Author #9 Looks great. Can you post one of the inside? Inside below. Not much to see. Very rusted. The liner is a green "haringbone" type material and there is an eyelet on the front. "A" washers are painted green. Leather chin strap is a later one as it has black hardware and the buckle is magnetic.

Thanks sig, You always have the stories that explain real life on a ship. Your right though, this color is just a little lighter than the haze gray.
