A friend of mine picked these up at a local estate sale a couple of weeks ago. I bought them from him this morning at the local show. I just thought the different styles of the same patch were really interesting. I think the first one is the 1st Composite Squadron which was on sub patrol in the Ascension Islands. Does anyone happen to know what the other one is?

 

You can't go wrong with a blue hand gripping a bloody samurai sword.........LOL

The second one is the Unofficial 12th Fighter Squadron while they flew P-39's , was with the 15th Fighter Group /7th , then 20th AAF, very cool on their "variations" in colors etc , thanks for sharing !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah , another "variation" they did a lot of them here and there , and it's always great to see them in these photos !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seeing as I make leather unit patches , I always enjoy finding the "variations" as when someone orders one I can ask them if they know of them and can figure "sometimes" the when/where of the reason why they're varied etc ,also some will ask me if I have the "variation" and am glad I do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about the first patch ? it looks CBI made plus the cobra gives it an India flavor.

The "embossed" one in posts' 7 & 8 blows me away Nice 3-D effect

yes the first patch is also amazing , it's the first Composite Squadron patch as posted and the first time I've even seen a patch of it in leather , so a Very nice find for sure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I definitely agree with Patch on this one, especially in lieu of the fact that the 1stCompSqdn

did not serve in the CBI, but the EAME and American Theaters.

Thanks to all for the comments. I appreciate it. I mainly bought the set of patches to get the 1st Composite Squadron patch because I thought is was so different. The design is the same but the materials and color scheme are vastly different from the standard US made wool patch (shown below for comparison).

Their history was actually pretty interesting. They were involved in the "Laconia Incident" as well. If anyone wants to read more, do a Wikipedia search for their commander Robert C. Richardson III (below)

I will probable sell the rest of them (as a group) with the hand painted 13th AAF patch that came with them. They will make a nice display together.

The pilot in this photo is wearing the patch of the 365th Fighter Group "Hell Hawks" well know author Robert Dorr has recently put out a book about this Group .
