February 17, 201412 yr #1 Really looked like this one was going to slip through the cracks into my fingers, but some heavy hitters got involved and it ended at 611 Tintype, copy of a tintype, discharge papers, and some pension papers to a Marine drummer who enlisted at 16. Paperwork included said he served a year from 1878-1879, but Ancestry had records for another Marine drummer, same name, in the Civil War...so I'm thinking it may have been the same Marine with broken service. February 18, 201412 yr #6 Very interesting grouping and cool grouping. My guess is the tin type dates from his first enlistment (CW period)...neat you can see the kepi in there....the papers from his second cruise....what is interesting he is listed as a landsman vice a Marine.....I have poor knowledge of this period but I wonder why landsman.....I thought the Navy used Landsman for those new to the service before they acquired skills. Any info would be appreciated.....now in retrospect I see why this group was so sought.

I suspect his previous Marine skills would have been of little use as a sailor. He was only enlisted for one year, and was discharged at his own request three months early. I would also guess he was of little use as a sailor too, and probably didn't want to reenlist in the Marines. Not an unusual situation for a man with no skills.Bluejacket
