Another EGW knife, possibly vet rework?

There have been a number of posts about the E.G. Waterman knives, and I think it is agreed that there are a large number of variations. I just picked one up from a family that says it was their grandfather's in WW2, but other than his name, they have no real information.

It sort of looks like the handle, guard and pommel have been replaced, but I would like to get the opinions of the members here as to whether they have ever seen one like this before.

It is not maker marked. The sheath appears OK. The handle is made of leather washers which have slightly dried out and are now a little loose, with two aluminum washers inserted. The guard seems to be about the right shape, but is fairly crudely made of aluminum. The pommel is also aluminum and has been hand stamped U S and 44.

I would appreciate any comments, especially if anyone has seen one with aluminum pommel and guard.

I have seen this style EGW knife handle before but not with this type EGW blade. If I had to guess I would say that someone put this blade on the handle after market. Could have been done in the field who knows. Matty
