At this time, 95 years ago today, the guns on the Western Front fell silent and the dreadful carnage of the Great War thankfully ended. Today, at precisely 1100hrs, in my country and throughout the Commonwealth, a solemn two minute’s silence will be observed in remembrance of the fallen from all of our wars, as we do at this time every year without fail.

 

On a personal level, I will be remembering my late grandfather, Sergeant Stanley L. Phillips, formerly of the Welsh Regiment. He was a volunteer who thankfully survived The Great War relatively unscathed. My only regret is that I never really got to know him as he passed away in 1958 when I was just five years old.

 

However, I have retained his medals and regimental cap badge which I had professionally mounted in a shadow box. Unfortunately,the picture quality is not good due to the reflectivity of the glass, but as viewed left to right the medals are: British War Medal 1914-20; WW1 Victory Medal; Territorial Force War Medal. The latter is one of the rarer British WW1 medals as only approximately 34,000 were issued...a drop in the ocean when one considers the numbers involved in WW1.

 

Today I salute him and all of our veterans and fallen from both sides of the Atlantic who fought side by side for a common cause...and continue to do so.

I had a great grandfather and great uncle who fought in the German Army during WW1 I of course never met them nor do I know their names but this is my great grandfathers medal I believe my uncle was KIA.

I REMEMBER MY GRANDFATHER ON MY MOM'S SIDE. HE NEVER WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE "GREAT WAR" EVEN THOUGH HE WAS WOUNDED TWICE. HE LIKED HIS COLT 45(DRINK),

as do many others here, i have quite a few vets in my family. only one lost his life in uniform. i have his portrait hanging in my living room---L/Cpl R.C.Hill, C company, 13th Battalion, The Black Watch of Canada. Ypres 1916.

Today I'll be remembering my 2 great grandfathers (Dad's side) who fought in the French army in WWI :

 

Georges Lamblat, a NCO in the 12th Hussards (light horse cavalry) and 2nd Colonial Artillery Rgt after the horse cavalry regiments were disbanded. He was a forward observer and got 3 citations for bravery.

Georges Sauvalle, a NCO in the 32nd Field Artillery Regiment. He was wounded in 1914 and got 1 citation for bravery.

Both of them survived the war.

I have retain Georges Lamblat's croix de guerre and dog tag.

I'll post a picture of the Croix de guerre later.

Remembering Pvt. Fredrick A Waiss, USMC. KIA 11-11-18 My wife's great uncle.

I had relatives that fought in both "Great Wars " they were all lucky and survived to those that didnt ,

Yes indeed Carl. They weren't so "great" if you were unfortunate enough to be caught up in them. Our parents / grand-parents lived through some tough times!

From WWI I remember my Great Uncle "Eddy" Eduardo Avedano, who was a prisoner of the Germans and was most likely captures during the massive breakthrough and subsequent Italian surrender at Caporetto. He actually convinced the liberating British he was an American and was discharged from the US army in 1919!

My Wife's great Grandfather Alexander Fate who served at the US Navy Seaplane base at St. Trojan France in WWI.

 

From WWII My Grandfather Paul B. Scott Company L 34th Rgt, 24th Division, New Guinea and Biak Islands

My Wife's Grandfather Donald Fate Company A 59th Armored Infantry Bn 13th Armored Division. Central Europe, Rhineland.

My Uncle Roland Martin 1st Marine Division, Purple Heart at Guadalcanal.

My Uncle Rolly Gerych 9th Air Force SAW unit, Battle of the Bulge

My Cousin whom I never met, also Rolly Gerych KIA in the Philippines with HQ Company 172nd Inf Rgt 43rd Division Jan,45.

 

From Desert Storm, my friend Sgt Kelly Mathews who was killed when his vehicle hit a cluster bomb and overturned (still miss you my friend).

 

From OIF My friend Sgt Benjamin Lewis who lost a son in combat in 2004 and took his own life this year after multiple deployments to Iraq.

LCPL Troy D. Nealey whom we buried on this day in 2006, his memory lives on through the AMVET Post we named after him in 2008.

 

And to all my fellow vets out there. Scott

I will be remembering my great uncle Corpral Arthur L. Shirley. Who was killed in action the day before the armistace was signed.

Hard to puit into words today. I'm being thanked by people, friend and family for my service, but what runs through my mind is the thanks and sadness I feel for all those who didn't come home to their families.

Three of my Great Grandfathers and one of my Great Great Grandfathers fought in the Great War.

 

My grandmother's father was born in Germany and served in the US army in WWI.

 

My Grandfather's father was born in Poland and served in the US army in WWI. Sadly, I do not have a photo of him.

 

 

My other Grandmother's father fought in the Italian Army in WWI. After the war he moved to the United States, where one of his sons proudly served in WWII.

 

My Great Grandmother's father served in WWI, two of his grandchildren proudly served in the US Army
