Hello, I just purchased tis machete at a local swap meet. can anyone tell me about it ? Is it a good WW2 machete.

What markings you got on the scabbard "Eagle" and i will await the experts verdict on this one as those SWI machetes raise 2 distinct schools of thought .

My friend, you have an S.W.I. machete. Very well made. Unfortunately they have been found to be after market fakes. Even M H Cole got fooled in his books. These were made by some company in Chicago or somewhere (can't remember the name). To fill a bunch of surplus scabbards which you probably have. It's only been a few years this fact has been out there. Don't feel lonely, I bought a mint one about 20 years ago for $10, mint condition, no scabbard.Thought I had a real prize. They are actually very good, well made machetes. Wouldn't surprise me if they were made by Ontario. Don't despair, you're not alone, a whole bunch of folks have them. SKIP

what are the chances of it being real ?

I found it with a lot of other ww2 items. Is there any way of telling if it is the real thing ?

Lloyd- I thought it was Schreck Wholesale Incorporated, could be the one you named. Frank Trazaska has one on his repro/fake ID page. But I can't get the pick to enlarge. Somewhere I have an article on these. "101", they were not made in WW2. I will get the info for you, if someone else doesn't come up with it first. We take care of each other on this sight. SKIP

AH see thats the beauty of our shared collective info SKIP...in my 30 plus years of collecting i have always been led to believe they were fakes made my Schrade Wholesale Industries...but then someone years ago came up with the theory they were WW2 ONTARIO made machete "blanks" restamped...sort of like KUTMASTER did to M3 blades to sell surplus machetes post war to the civilian hunting and camping industry.

I thought it was a legit ww2 machete. Why would they date it U.S. 1943 ?

It is very faded where would the markings be located and what exactly am I looking for ? I'm more of a helmet guy haha

If it's a legit scabbard, with the the machete, probably around $40-$50. Big guess, not sure of current scabbard prices, figure $20 for machete. Who's the scabbard maker?, Hopefully not SWI, cause now their making repros for the re-enactor market. You may not have been burned as bad as you think. You have a well made, functional machete. SKIP

From the pictures the scabbard "Looks" right and appears of the WW2 era...but see theres the flag...the scabbard is more worn than the machete...a pic of the markings would help narrow it down Eagle.

The scabbard may have markings behind the tab that the wire hook is sewn to. Try pulling the tab back and see if they are there.

Don't see anything. Is it possible it was not labeled or just really worn ?

Try to see it this way. Even M. H. Cole got fooled now and then. We've all been in this boat sometime or the other. The good news is that it's a quality piece. Even today I've seen M8A1 scabbards with S.W.I. marked on the throat. I guess the fakers are now faking the fakes.

It's a great display piece til you get another. It's a real machete, in a real sheath. SKIP
