Hello all,

 

I was told my bayonet is a fake because the RIA is not R.I.A. and that the grips are wrong, is this correct?

 

Can anyone please comment on the authenticity of the scabbard?

Everything looks original except the grips on the bayonet. They look as reproduction as can be. Original wooden grips had a shallow scalloped pattern all over. The composite (rubber or bakelite?) grips introduced in 1942 had that lined pattern. As far as the scabbard, it looks original but repainted. Originally, the M3 scabbard would've had parkerized metal for the throat and hanger. And as far as i know nobody is reproducing RIA bayonets. If you look on the underside of the throat you'll see the manufacturer's mark usually "BN" and one or two numbers.

This is the maker's stamp on the underside of the throat that I was talking about.

The bayonet on top has original wooden grips with scallaped areas on the grip, the lower one has the WW2 era composite grips with the distinct grooves on the grips.

Not only are the grips fake, but also the blade, catch, guard, scabbard, markings. Well let's just say it like it is. The entire thing is fake.

Sorry. It's a reproduction or outright fake. I don't see anything right about this bayonet or scabbard.

I was about to say the same thing. The stampings on that blade and the release button are uuuugly. Scabbard I was less sure of, but the damage to the clips on the scabbard looked bad to me.

Is this an old fake, new fake, foreign copy, other? I'm curious. I don't know much about blades.

The grips are new, I have never seen the "flaming bomb" look like that either.

The Atlanta Cutlery copy uses the periods between the letters R.I.A. Also, someone obviously tried to "age" this bayonet and scabbard...to deceive?

That blade is a reproduction made by Windlass Steelcrafts of India and sold in this country by Atlanta Cutlery (as has already been said) and International Military Antiques.

looks like a cheap repo from IMA / International Military Antiques , they sell a lot of fake militaria made in India

The thing that bugged was the bright green plastic in the scabbard. I knew had seen it before. Check this out

Key identifiers of this bayonet, because I got scammed by one. Look at the button, instead of the stippling being moulded, they are punched in. Also, look at the finish, it's not parkerized, but has a finish that looks like green anodizing. It doesn't take much to take it off, you can see where it has been scraped off on this example. I took mine and used some paint stripper and stripped this bayonet down to bare metal and then took some cold gun bluing and blued it. It ended up looking much better and more realistic.

I bought it for $50, after bluing, I sold it as a repro on ebay and ended up getting $75, so I slid out from under it.

I've seen a militaria dealer at the local gun show, age these slightly, mix them in w/ originals, and put a $250-$350 price tag on them. Got an Atlanta Cutlery Catalog last week. They're M1917 Bolo is scary. The also make an M1909 that could age very easily, and go for real prices. Granted, it's tough to tell from the pics, but that's all it takes. SKIP
