Many books on the Iwo Jima campaign will show the 16" bayonet still in use by the USMC.

One can see them too in the footage of the Battle of San Pietro, this being December 1943.

Found one, an 82nd Abn Div GI in June 1943 in Africa during a training problem, if you look closely he has it's scabbard on it, for safety precautions I suppose.

Even more interesting is the man wearing both the m1910 entrenching tool & m1910 pick mattock at the same time, while also wearing the type II split sole service shoe, which by early 1943 was officially designated as a CONUS-only shoe, having been replaced by the roughouts & combat boot.

In post #33, the soldier with the pick mattock and shovel appears to be wearing a .45 pistol, possibly indicating he's an officer.  I also see a M1 Carbine.
