I'm new to this community so here is my first foray into the preservation of history. I recently found 2 musette bags used by a relative during WWII. One of the bags still has the suspenders and pistol belt with first aid pouch all rigged together. Other than some corrosion and rust on the grommets and buckles the bags are in great shape with no tears, holes or missing components. The problem I'm facing is that the rubberized cloth inserts inside the main pocket of the bags is hardened in some places. Parts of the inserts are still flexible but other portions are hardened. When I have applied gentle pressure in an attempt to flatten out the spots they start to crack. I have thought about applying an oil of some kind or armor-all type product but wanted to get some input on this before I ruin a piece of family history. BTW, I asked my great uncle (the man I got them from) about them and he told me they were the ones he used while fighting in the Pacific theater. Anyone have a suggestion? All help is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, once they arrive at this point, it's really to late. You can use some Armor All, but you take the chance of staining the surrounding material. You may be able to soften it up, but it will eventually return to the brittle state again, you are simply staving off the inevitible.
