Not sure about this one. The soldier served in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division as a door gunner on a Medevac chopper. Medical Corps? Doesn't look dark enough. Transportation Corps? It still doesn't look dark enough. I'm leaning towards Signal Corps, but can't reconcile that with his duty in Vietnam. Oh well.

I'm assuming this is a Signal Corps bib since he is not wearing branch insignia but is wearing the Signal Corps School DUI.

Here's an odd pattern bib worn by members of the 4th Medical Battalion in the 1970's. The pattern on the bib looks the same as the mosaic pattern in the frame.

Very unusual, almost like a Paisley.

memory sure plays tricks. I was a Warrant Officer and "remember" my bib being WO brown. That color wasn't listed on the chart. I really despised those things. On one Korean tour we had to attend Officer's Call each morning at breakfast. I was tempted to pull my bib end out and blow my nose on it while the CO was giving his brief. Never did though.

I retired in 75.

Does anyone know if there is a way to "era date" bibs/scarfs based on material, snap-style or construction?

 

I'm sure construction methods (even within eras) varied pretty widely depending on the manufacturer. I've seen some made in Japan 100% rayon ones, parachute material ones, crepe paper material ones, etc. Only ever encountered a handful that had any markings at all.

 

The one I have is the crepe paper style material with Scovill snaps. I've been told it was Vietnam era but have absolutely no information to back that up.

As you said, Hard to Tell, only two sure ways I can think would be 1: to have exact provenance with a scarf/bib found with a uniform grouping, the grouping of say a 50s or 60s served GI, or 2: perhaps an unissued scarft/bib, that might be still in it's bag or box with bag or box having a date on it.

Another early 80s sighting, a say late 1981 portrait of a 18th Eng Bde GI, 79th Eng Bn in West Germany, branch scarf with brigade patch on it.. A similiar portain from same unit as sen on post #213.

 

 

 

 

 

Bib worn by a member of the Finance Corps. I assume the bib is silver gray which is the primary branch color. However, the piping color of the Finance Corps is golden yellow.

Here is an ascot I had issued to me when I was stationed with the 1st Battalion 16th Infantry at Panzer Kaserne Germany 1975-78.  As I recollect, 'Supply' issued these out to us to wear for special occasions. We were supposed to turn them in and I guess I never did as I still have it! I hope they don't chase me down...haha!
