January 20, 201313 yr #55 Ok more information , he enlisted in March of 1953 at 19 . Korean service medal has no signs of ever being any holes in it . March 1953, then he was over there post armistice. this confirms the lack of campaign stars on the Korean Service Ribbon. I still curious why the 1st Marine Division though. The wearing of the Meritorious Unit Commendation is curious as well, while the 4th Battalion 77th Artillery did have a Valorous Unit Citation awarded it, streamer embroidered VIETNAM, it not receive a MUC, perhaps the MUC was from the unit or one of the units Whitt was in at the time in Vietnam, and was intitled to wear it. But still, why the 1st Marine Division as a combat patch, a unit he seen no actual combat in, in a war that was, lets face it over, and no Army combat patches for his Army service in Nam were he must have seen combat. By the amount of overseas bars he has he must have done two tours of duty in Vietnam as a soldier which makes this even the more curious.
January 20, 201313 yr Author #56 Don't forget a black tie. The set came with one of the thin black ties.
January 20, 201313 yr Author #57 I will be filling out the paperwork today to obtain his military record. I guess Lonzo had a live in girlfriend who got all of Lonzo's paperwork. The son got the uniform because his dad gave it to him before his passing.

I had a first sergeant who was authorized 4 different combat patches, but he usually wore the one he was "most proud of", Special Ops Command. Maybe Whitt really was proud of his time in the 1st MARDIV. After all, there's only room for 1 patch on there, might as well go with your favorite. Or maybe he just enjoyed being different and wearing a USMC patch on his Army Class As because he could.
