December 9, 201213 yr #1 Hello, This is a fairly recent pickup, and I have some questions about it. How old is this piece? I can't find any information AWS-8 after 1946 when they changed designations but I'm not sure if the patches are that old. The don't appear to glow under blacklight though, either. Also, who would have worn this insignia? Did the Marines in AWS-8 wear this or a similar design? Thanks a lot! Hunter

December 10, 201213 yr #4 I would assume that the ground crew wore these as I believe this type of unit was only a ground unit , not flying related......................

December 12, 201213 yr #7 I think I have a finished one somewhere,I'll look around for it.My thoughts on this patch when I first saw it awhile back was that it was made after the war,maybe as a commemorative,or reunion piece,as it has the two dates on it. By the way,I just picked up some patches that are on factory strips like yours,not this unit,but some others.They are pretty neat pieces to have in my opinion,some are all finished,and others in various stages of the manufacturing process.I'm going to try and post them soon.
December 12, 201213 yr #8 I'll be following this thread. I recently picked up a dog tag from a Marine radio operator attached to AWS-8 who was wounded in the early days in the fighting on Okinawa. No such luck finding anything about AWS-8 aside from there being a book that is since out of print written by a member of AWS-8 detailing the'r involvement in WWII. What I do know is that they were stationed at Cherry Point, N.C. and were deployed for the invasion of Okinawa, and stayed on for occupation duty until close to mid-1946.
December 12, 201213 yr #10 It appears by the lastest posting that your patches could have been made in 1946 as the info show them being deactivated in that year , they may ahve reactivated but I don't think so . This site is great for all the info you can find through it's members etc !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
