ID Help - USAAF B11 jacket with fur

Hi '

I need your help and advices.

Can someone tell me what kind of fur i have on the hood of this jacket? It's a ww2 b-11 manufactured by Metro Sportswear.

I live in belgium and when i buy items in the USA, i use "myUS" (http://www.myus.com/) to repatriate them. They are shipped to florida and next sent to belgium in one big box with DHL. It reduces shipping costs and the invoice in case of control.

Yesterday, i got a mail from myUS notifying that this jacket has "Prohibited Item hood of jacket". It seems that they have an issue with the fur on the hood. I've contacted them for more informations but i would like to have another ID.

- What kind of fur do you have here?

- Why a fur on a 60 years old jacket is a problem?

Many thanks.

Benoit.

Here's some pics of the jacket and the link to the ebay auction.

The body of the coat should be lined with alpaca (which it is!) and the hood trimmed with mouton (sheepskin) which it appears to be.

I'm not really sure that's sheepskin. It seems different than the other jacket i have, specially the hairs.

I should have said "lambswool" rather than sheepskin...it's a little softer. Is it natural...suede backed?

You guys do have a ton of "hoops to jump through" to get your stuff don't you??! A lot of US states have certain restrictions on certain furs, mostly wolf or bear. I don't see anything worth restricting in the pictures, I believe you've been unlucky enough to have an inept postal inspector check your package. Your inquiry should clear things up, I hope! I have no experience with myUS, how does it work? I've certainly sold to France via a US address but did not even know such a site existed!

As Sabrejet stated, it is a Mouton fur. I don't know what the "inspector" thinks it is but it shouldn't be a problem when you tell them what it actually is. Either way, when you tell them that the coat is over 60 yrs old that should also clear up any issues. Nice find, I'm currently on the hunt for one of these.

You can look up Mouton fur in wikipedia and copy the definition. Then find the spec sheet for that jacket, maybe on line or from a friendly member of the forum that confirms it mouton. Since its processed lambskin should not be a problem. If that does not work have it shipped by another service and include the info and maybe it will get through. Or find out how to declare the origin in the shipping paperwork and hope for the best.....

Some countries have prohibitions of import of items to protect their own agriculture or industries. Some (like US) have prohibitions to prevent spread of certain diseases; for example, dried animal hides can transmit anthrax. Below link is a CDC report on an anthrax case in 2006.

I would go read your country's customs regulations to try to figure it out. The answer is probably there.

Thanks all for your help.

So the fur on the hood is made by sheepskin, thanks! It helps a lot.

i've sent an email to myUS for more explanation and i hope that the situation will evolve positively. I'll keep you informed.

I've check on the CITES (EU reglementation) and it seems there's no restriction about sheepskin fur.

MyUS is in fact a postal adress for non-US residents. When i buy something, i ask to the seller to send the package to my "myUS" adress. They pack up all my purchases in one big box and i repatriate it to belgium when i want. It's really cheaper for the shipping cost.

I've got some great news. They confirmed that SheepSkin is approved to ship from MyUS.com.

Many thanks for your help!
