It probably affects the value for the purists, but I think for a FSSF collector it would still have significant value just because it likely has a a story behind the handle replacement if it was actually theatre-done....at least it doesn't have some crappy cheap plastic handle from the 70's on it....

I think it is an interesting knife. It is always fascinating to see issue knives with theater-altered handles. 1canpara is right... purist edged weapon collectors will probably pan it in most cases, but it does add a different, interesting dimension to a highly sought-after knife. If there was some sort of confirmed provenance, it may help the knife, but as is, I'm sure it isn't quite worth the thousands of dollars that some V-42s can garner.

 

All in all, I probably wouldn't have passed it up if I had found it.

Actually, I agree with the above. I like it! Some purist edged weapon collectors may prefer to have the original handle but how many exist with a handle like that? Probably not many and at least it's not a crappy civilian one. I don't know how difficult it would be to determine when the handle was replaced but for me, it's unique and it's got character.

If I had my choice, I would rather have an unmodified one, but they all do look alike. On the other hand, this one is special because the owner found it special enough to dress it up to his liking. How many V-42 theater knives have you seen? The same thing with my Ek Model No. 9 theater modified knife.

 

Bottom line: I like it!

 

About the value, modified and without a sheath, I would think about $400? :dunno:

THIS IS THE FIRST THEATER V-42 I HAVE SEEN ALSO. I WILL SEE IF I CAN FIND OUT ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT THE ORIGINAL OWNER. THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS. ED

There was one on ebay a few months ago with the typical plastic washer handle like many theatre made knives have.The pommel was original with skull crusher point as well as the guard.I recall it went in the $1200 range.

Another one that the user did up to what he liked but he ruined the value of it. Let's face it, he didn't know that this knife would have the value it does today so take it for what it is and let sleeping dogs lie. It is a V42, modified.
