my father got this in an antique shop here in N.H. in the 1950's, it is named to lt. charles e. goodhue, 16th vermont from the ladies of towshend vt., they were at gettysburg and fired into the flanks of pickets charge, I have goodhue's records from the nat. archives, he got sick in Va. before gettysburg and I have no deffinate proof that he was there, he was discharged with the rest of the regiment after gettysburg and died in 1865. I also got a copy of a picture of him from the univ. of vt., unfortunately he isn't wearing the sword in the picture but looks like death warmed over. howard coffin, author of 9 months to gettysburg (about this brigade) was giving a talk in towshend a couple of years ago and I went to listen to him, I brought the sword to show to him afterwards, he said it was one of the finest 2nd brigade artifacts that he had ever seen, it sort of brought me chills to bring it there and possibly be in the same building that it was first presented in 1862.

That is neat. What a beauty. Swords like that have pretty much disappeared from the market. Of course you already know this but I had to say something.

A wonderful presentation Foot Officer sword. I particularly like the engraved scabbard mounts and the inscription is textbook! Who is the maker of your sword?

there are no maker marks at all on either the sword or the scabbard, I've been to gettysburg and stood where the 16th vt. was, I just wish I could confirm that he was there. I had never even looked up the history of the unit until my buddy asked me if I wanted to go to gettysburg about 10 years ago, then I got interested in it and also learned about my ancesters that were in the 3rd 4th and 17th vermont, two of them were killed in the war.

he is only 25 or 26 years old in this picture, I looked at the muster rolls again and if I read them correctly he is present in july '63.
