July 18, 201214 yr #105 Reading an Iwo book right now and I found my answer about if the Marines at Iwo ever saw the picture of the flag raising. It's an interview with a 4th marine vet. First he says they didn't see the flag raising because they were on the other side of the island. He said he saw the picture for the first time when they were about to leave. He said copies of news papers with the picture on the cover were being passed around that were delivered from Guam. Hope that helps! The book I'm reading is Never in Doubt by Lynn Kessler. I just saw the plate, do you still need it translated? Leonardo
February 22, 201313 yr #107 Hey M, Looks like whoever bought this grouping has broken it up for parts on ebay.... Shame to see this nice group broken up into random parts and the Marines history with it. Here is one of the auctions but you can search under sellers other items to see the rest of the parts and pieces.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/111014905168?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Love that custom HBT and seabag. February 22, 201313 yr #110 Not sure what the seller wanted for the grouping, but I'd have made an endzone run for it... Does anyone know if the group was ever offered here on the forum?
February 22, 201313 yr #112 Duke Oh, by the way, my 5th great-grandfather was a Hessian who stayed in the US after the revolution so I love your user name!
February 22, 201313 yr #113 Thanks Bob! Theres a family connection on my side as well, hence the name. I guess the seller has his reasons... Just always sad to see something like this.
February 22, 201313 yr #115 I made some bids on the USMC HBT jacket and the USMC painted sea bag, hopefully someone will be able to keep it all together. Philip

February 22, 201313 yr #117 .... Shame to see this nice group broken up into random parts and the Marines history with it. Love that custom HBT and seabag. What shame to see an incredible grouping broken up and scattered into the wind. The sea bag and stencilled jacket are killer items, hope someone manages to keep them together! Will

February 22, 201313 yr Author #119 Guys I'm very sorry. For the past 6 months I have been taking care of a drastic family situation. These things have gone from historical groupings to a tool to take care of my family. I love this stuff but love my family more. Right now people are more important than things. I started by keeping the groupings together and the majority stayed together. But it was hard to sell them and the offers were so low. A lot of stuff I sold cheap on extended payment plans. A few weeks ago a group, similar to one I sold, brought 5 times what I got broken up. It was a no brainer for me...family first.

Even if this grouping is very interesting, if someone wants to keep it together ... then he should make you an offer you can accept. Despite all the respect we owe to the vets, I think we must take care of the living first

I know where you are coming from its sad to see a grouping split up but there are times when need money and no one is wiling to pay for the whole group. I have been in the same situation where I needed to put family above a grouping its sad but you gotta do what you gotta do. I hope that everything works out for you and you area able to get the money you need

February 22, 201313 yr #124 Family first for sure M. NO one can fault you for that... but I think we can all agree it's sad nonetheless... I have to think of my own battlefield pick ups from Iraq/Afghanistan. Stories behind the items (insignia, flags etc) that are unique but will some day be lost to time and their meanings with them. Inevitable I suppose. Good luck with the auctions, hopefully someone will get the bulk of it.
February 25, 201313 yr #125 Family first for sure M. Hessian said it right, family comes first... Hope everything works out ok Manny! Will
