The "PBS News Hour" and ABC's "This Week" have been presenting them since the GWOT started, in silence as their names and photographs become available. Also, from time to time Nancy Grace will remember one of the Fallen at a time on her HLN evening show. But, if not for them it would be as if nothing unusual had happened, to anyone. I call it the "Anna Nicole Smith Bouncing Bear" syndrome...

As someone who has served and led these men and women in combat for the last decade, I will tell you that these are the faces of another "greatest generation". Their endurance, creativity, guile, intelligence and motivation is truly unbelievable, esp given the "all volunteer" nature of our force. I entered the service in 1985, and the military of that era would not have been up to the tasks currently confronting our young men and women...and their families. A decade of continuous war against a brutal, crafty, ideologically motivated enemy has taken an enormous toll, and not just in death statistics. Broken families, physical wounds, psychological issues, stress injuries and fatigue are rampant. I have been responsible for the death of enemy combatants, and also had men killed under my command. The scars left by these experiences will never leave me...most who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan will tell you the same thing. I know from experience that there is a gut wrenching personal story behind each of these photos, for the families and units they served in. Inconsolable grief, guilt and sense of loss that will never be fixed. Not a pretty picture at all. Please do remember them...and those that are left behind. Thanks again.
