January 21, 200818 yr #1 I bought this USMC NCO Sword at the Louisville SOS last February. I liked it because of the engraved blade- "SSG D.P. SCHAEFFER, FROM SNCO'S 1ST ANGLICO". The blade is marked on one side "Proved" inside a Star of David, and on the other side "Stainless, Hilborn Hamburger Inc, New York, Made in Solingen, Germany" The leather is dark brown, not black. My guess is that it is Vietnam War era. What do the experts think? Can anyone help me research SSG Schaeffer?
January 21, 200818 yr #2 The "ANGLICO" on the blade means Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. These are small groups of Marine Corps personnel who coordinate artillery, air, and sea support for troops on the ground. Interestingly, while one may think they only control Marine and Navy aircraft to cover Marine units, they actually are trained and coordinate foreign artillery, air, and sea support for US and foreign troops. The predecessors of these units were the JASCO (Joint Assault Signal Company) units of World War II. I don't have rosters covering these guys, unfortunately.
January 23, 200818 yr Author #3 Does anyone know when the Marines changed the color of their leather from dark brown to black? I am thinking it was in the early 1960s.
