Thought the group would like to see some unusual US Public Health Service Cadet Nurse program patches. The regular Cadet Nurse patch isn't to hard to find in either gray or white but the Graduate Cadet Nurse and especially the Nurse Education are very hard to find. The bottom row is for the Occupational Therapy personnel. The last one on the viewer's right is the first type and quite scarce.

I did not log on last night so I did not see this post. Somehow I missed it this morning. I had no idea there were so many variations. I have the regular nurse cadet in grey and white but did not know the graduate nurse and nurse education patches even existed. Very interesting. Who would wear these patches? I would think that a "graduate nurse" would wear regular nurse's insignia. Who would wear the education ones? Teachers?

 

Edit with another question: What kind of patch is the grey with the OT? A variation of the occupational therapist?

NEVER seen some of those!

A Graduate Nurse is a nurse that has completed her training but has not yet taken the test to be a licensed RN. The test is a long and complicated one and in the days before they were computerized they were only given a few times a year. Often a nurse would graduate from nursing school and have to wait several months to take the test. A Graduate Nurse was allowed to work but only under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Now with everything done with computers nurses can take the test as soon as they finish school so a Graduate Nurse is now pretty much a thing of the past.

You are collecting something that is truly esoteric and not familiar to a lot of collectors. As I am writing this, your thread had 188 views. This would tell me that people are interested in what you are showing. Many of the viewers probably just do not know enough about these to make a comment on them.

 

But thank you for sharing these and providing the history behind them. Now your fellow collectors know what to look for! You very well may have encouraged someone to branch out their collecting in a new direction!
