M1905E1 Grips

I'm doing a slight restoration/preservation on an AFH 1943 bayonet. It appears to be the cut down 1905 version. This bayonet has been through it a few times, but has a nice saltiness. The problem I am having is with the grips that are on it. They fit very poorly at the pommel as it appears the rear section of the grips is wider than the bayonet allows. I am assuming, through the limited research that I have been able to do, that the grips are for an M1, is that correct?

Both grips are the same shape, except one side appears to have been trimmed down for a better fit, was this common practice? Should I trim down the other grip to make it fit correctly as well or just leave it as is?

My M1 grips fit kinda crappy, I think it's the nature of the beast, myself. Pretty sure the black grips for M1905E1s and M1s are the same.
