June 21, 201016 yr #4 The leadership compass rose armband was worn by students. They would often cross train with other branches and use common training areas and these would identify the students.
June 21, 201016 yr #5 just picked up these Combat Leadership School and Sergeant armbands. I was wondering what they were used for? Did drill instructors wear them? In a word, no Drill Instructors wore their permanent rank on their collars or sleeves depending on era. These armbands were made to be worn by students going through basic training. Positions rotated quickly and depending on the drill instructors' moods, the rank could change four or five items in a single training session. I don't recall the "compass" patch being worn when I went through, just the armbands for Sergeant and Corporal. Only one armband was worn and I seem to recall them being worn on the left sleeve. My recollection was that the student Platoon Sergeant wore the sergeant chevron and the squad leaders wore corporal chevrons. The rank structure could have been dramatically different for soldiers going through basic at other posts. Allan
June 21, 201016 yr #6 Both of your Brassards are are for Solders in training. Both are covered in AR 670-1. The description for the "compass rose" brassard is below. Trainees in leadership courses brassard. The brassard consists of a golden-yellow and dark-blue “compass rose” on a dark-blue background. All students attending leadership courses wear the brassard. PG 261 http://www.army.mil/usapa/epubs/pdf/r670_1.pdf Actual use of these brassards at various training bases and within various course will vary by location and time.
