Distinctive Unit Insignia reference

Recommended Posts

No, this is just reference material, Andrew.

It makes identification easier for me and others.

I only have a few like the 704th Tank Destroyer Battalion and 328th Infantry Regiment.

Erwin

Thanks Jeeper704! Some nice DIs you got there.

Andrew

Hi,

One more ....

504th P.I.R. (Infantry Regiment) - 82nd A/B

overseacapabsh4.jpg

Best regards,

Ricardo.

This is a very nice 504th tunic. However, the DIs are postwar, particularly if the flames are enameled (1952-1968) or incised gold (1968-present). The earliest versions, late 1940s to early 1950s, are pin backed and have flat gold flames.

Only the 643rd and 644th TD pieces shown are of WW2 vintage. The others were made for collectors. The original 640th TD is similar to the piece shown, but made of plastic.

Of those displayed for reference, the following are repros, fakes/fantasies (made from a photo of a sign, or from an entry in a unit insignia design contest and not chosen, an official drawing but insignia NOT made during WW II, or because some maker dreamed it up because he's smarter than the average collector):

602 (actually depicted is metal for 142nd Tank Bn; design is for 802nd TD, which wore an embroidered design in WW II)

603 ®

605 ®

607 (F/F)

609 (F/F)

611 (F/F)

612 (F) - wore cloth embroidered in WW II, not metal

626 (F/F)

628 (F/F) does not resemble actual design

633 (F/F)

634 (F/F)

640 ® actual was decal sandwiched in plastic

646 (F/F)

656 (F/F)

661 (F/F)

672 (F/F)

679 (F/F)

691 (F/F)

Looking at these would teach you what not to buy

A good source are the DI books written by Bob Capistrano; he has color pix of actual WW II pieces.

And after I wrote the original entry, I noted that a very modest Bob C. chimed in. Contact him for the books. You can save yourself some big $ and headaches by knowing exactly what to look for. Think of his books as insurance.

Thanks for the information.

Maybe it is a good thing I posted them here as it will warn other collectors about these things.

As I stated earlier, I do not have these DUIs in my collection.

I posted them as reference only.

Maybe it would be nice to post the "real" ones next to them?

At least some of us are trying to make a decent reference topic about it and we sure can use some help.

Take a look at http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/. Hopefully, you can find at least some of what you are looking for there.

Also, you may want to consider joining the American Society of Military Insignia Collectors (ASMIC). They have a website at www.ASMIC.org. Membership is open worldwide and they publish many catalogs and periodicals concerning insignia. It also provides information about others who share your same collecting interests.

Thanks Laury

I think it will have to be the ASMIC, unless anyone else knows?

These are worn in pairs so that the wolfhound is facing forward.
