Exactly, patches: a thin black piece of elastic is attached to both sides of the back.

Thanks, Salvage Sailor! The wearer of that armband must have been quite the shooter. Here’s a Marine aviator one:

I believe this is a late Spanish-American War era “Farrier” armband:

By the way, the red color in the horseshoe-shaped “Farrier” armband, immediately above, indicates that it is for an Artillery unit. This armband is for the Iowa National Guard’s 135th Public Affairs Detachment:

A WWII or immediately post-War Army Chemical Corps (ACC) armband with the “V for Victory” included in the design:

This armband would have been made right at the end of the war or immediately post-war in 1946 when the Chemical Warfare Service officially changed its designation to the Chemical Corps. The design also includes the Chemical Corps branch insignia of the six-sided benzene ring superimposed over two crossed gold retorts (or beakers).

Civil Defense, but not sure of the location. Washington State, perhaps?

Here was my find today. USAREUR MP brassard. The snaps are labeled; RAU on top, KII KIT underneath. What does that tell us?
