Allan H. Posted January 10, 2011 #1 Posted January 10, 2011 Here is the SSI on an English made Ike jacket that I recently picked up. In my opinion, it is a goregeous example of an individual's desire to set himself apart from the others in his squadron. The SSI is English made and machine emboidered on blue felt. a row of gold bullion "tress" has been sewn around the border of the patch and then sewn to the uniform. In several squadrons, crews were identified for their abilities in their respective positions on bomber crews. These crews were given the "honor" of flying in the lead formation to bomb targets in the German Reich. The owner of this SSI evidently wanted to make sure that nobody missed the fact that he was one of the elite in his squadron. I've posted an image of the wing and the Combat Aircrew backing patch in the Wings section. Allan
