M1942 & M1943 HBT Uniforms

Recommended Posts

This is one of my M42 herringbone twill (HBT) jackets from my collection. Note the unit patch, 16th Infantry Regiment, which during WWII was with the 1st Infantry Division.

I brought this shirt over the weekend, not for the badges, but because its a good big [44R] 2nd pattern [special] that I've been after for a long time. I know that more or less anything went regards to rank stripes on uniforms but this has the chino type. In the insignia section ref to CIB's it was mentioned about them [CIB] being seen on HBT shirts. My question is, would a cloth type be correct on this or is this shirt a KNOCK up?

That is an interesting shirt. I can't say for sure if it is "messed with" or not. All the pics that I recall of CIB's on combat clothing are the metal pin on type. I do not recall a sewn on cloth CIB. That is not to say it didn't happen though. Those shirts were in use long after the war and the CIB could be post war but then the chevrons would be wrong.

I have seen several early HBT jackets without the 'gas' flap and with the hollow 'wreath' buttons as illustrated below. A similar jacket can be seen worn by George Stevens in Europe on the D-Day to Berlin DVD. I have never seen trousers with those same buttons though. Did they exist?

Good question! Personally I've never seen wreath button trousers either. Also, the unissued wreath button jackets that I've looked at up close had U.S. Navy stock # tags in them.

A friend of mine had one that was heavily impregnated with CC2 however the tag was not legible.

This is a comparison of the USN marked shirts that I have. All have the wreath, open face buttons except for the one Army version that is shown for comparison. I do not have any matching trousers either.

I really don't know what these are for sure, but they came together with a Navy contract coat. They have no Army contract tag or Navy contract stamp. They have an Army HBT weave and the open center wreath style buttons.

Anyone know where I can get either an Army Dark Shade HBT Uniform or just trousers for under $20?

Dedicated to my great grandfather, Pvt. Harry E. Stevenson, of Detachment 6, 166th Signal Photographic Company, 5th Infantry Division, 3rd Army.
