Andrei,

Are you pulling my leg ? (...)

JC

Not at all, my friend. Argentina made Colt 45 under license. Perhaps the Argentinian Navy got flight jackets from an american company.

What kind of plane did the Argentinian Navy flew in the 50s, 60s ?

The fighter pilot who sunk the HMS Sheffield flew an american Skyhawk and fired a french Exocet missile.

Everything is possible !

 Damn'!

They were buying her war material all around the world. If my memory are good, Argentinean Skyhawk were 2nd hand planes issue form US Navy. So as you says, all it's possible ;)

And French Exocet missible was badly know in the USN for to be used by a Iraqi plane for shot the USS Stark...

Dave,

Thanks for the input.

So you are saying this is a "PX" jacket.

Do you happen to know if "Flying Equipment Co." manufactured mil. spec. jackets too, or was it just a clearing house label ?

JC

Hi J.C.

As far as I know this Flying Equipment Co. may in fact did do a USN G-1 jacket contract as I have heard that they did. However, I have not ever seen one with an authentic contract number nor is this Flying Equipment Company's name attached to the list of known manufacturers seen below.

If you find a USN jacket with a label attached information as with one seen above then chances are it's the real thing!

These same vintage reproduction flight jackets like yours show up more often than you might think. This is not the first one that I have seen. They wear the same as the original but simply not as collectable.

Cheers, Dave

Yup, it's a private purchase. The zipper pull is actually not the actual pull for this slider. Still a great looking jacket that was used by someone in the military in the 50s

Dave,

Now this is interesting, I have a Pritzker jacket it's a CONTRACT NO. n383s - 319A SPEC. 7823 (AER)...

It isn't on the above list, but I have know doubt it is a 'real' mil. spec jacket.

Wonder what that means ?

JC

Bazel,

I agree, I have no doubt in my mind that this is private purchase jacket, but I have to ask you, can you show an example of the correct zipper pull for this slider ?

And also, I am wondering does anyone have any thoughts on the patch ? It has a sort of para-military look to it (moderate pun intended).

IMAGE shows three TALON zippers.

Middle: AN-J3a (brass)

Hi J.C.,

It would be my best estimate that the exact type (brass or nickel) of zipper assembly for these Flying Equipment G-1 jackets might vary. However, those that I have seen were usually blackened Talon assemblies like the one seen below. As for the sliders, they are interchangeable as for sure yours came from a much earlier Talon assembly and probably from that style found on an M-422A.

talon_zipperdetail.jpg

In the past, I have seen similar Talon zipper assemblies used as replacement (after the fact) assemblies on that same era (1950s) USN jackets but never on a true Mil Spec USN jacket.

Cheers, Dave

The one in the middle would be correct. Also the one that Dave showed is also correct for this type of a zipper. The pull you have on yours is from an earlier WWII jacket. I probably have the correct zipper pull laying around. If I find one I will ship it to you.

Thanks for the info on the zipper pull.

Out of the hundreds (probably thousands) of vintage jackets I've looked at, I have to admit I've never really noticed or paid much attention to the black Talon zipper.

I've only got eyes for the bell, deco, tear drop and paper clip Talons, Conmatics, Crowns and Conmars.

Bazel, thanks for the offer on the pull... I actual like the one that is on this jacket.

Interestingly enough, everything on this jacket looks to have only been laid down once. No restitching, no open seams, the zipper pull isn't even scuffed up in the way it might be if some body had swapped it out of replaced it.

I think I'll post the name plate over in the SSI forum and see if anyone has insight on that.

Thanks all,

JC

I believe the Monarch M-422 I just bought has a blackened Talon zipper too, but shaped like the M-422A Talon pulls. I will double check.

Kurt,

That would be interesting.

I don't recall seeing black zippers on issued items until... what, the late 60's or 70's or even later.

Please show us a picture of the assembly, if that is the case.

Thanks,

Looks like a USN G-1 jacket. A nice one too! Not sure about the wings- Navy/USMC jump wings?

-Joe

My 2 cents on the name patch is that this guy was a Navy PR (Aircrew Survival Equipmentman) or what we call a Parachute rigger. Having been stationed on an aircraft carrier and at a Naval Air Station, I worked with some of the PR’s. They are the one that sewed patches for pilots, maintained their flight gear and equipment and pack their parachutes. They have a pretty cool job.

So it’s possible that this guy purchased the jacket at the Navy exchange and made a personalized name patch (PR’s can also do that) and wore this as an “unofficial” work jacket in his division.

Kaigun & Johnny,

That seems like a plausible explanation to me....sounds good too, everybody likes parachute riggers. Intersting though that he wouldn't put his rank or rate on the patch.

Happy New Year to everybody.

Ok, now truth be told, I am not exactly sure what the deal with this jacket is.

IT DOES appear to be from the early 1950's.

IT LOOKS to be an constructed almost exactly like a contract # 7823 G-1 jacket.... in fact if the mfg. tag where absent, I would have assumed it was a mil. issue jacket.

EVERYTHING IS ORIGINAL to the jacket, including the name plate.

THE NAME PLATE looks to have USN Para wings on it, BUT the name looks to be civilian (no rank, name in quotes).

It definitely has more wear than the rest of the jacket, but it appears to have only ever been sewn to this one jacket.

THE ONLY DIFFERENCES in construction between this jacket and a Government contract jacket is the GREEN pocket liners (Good eye Kevin T.), and the dark colored zipper stop at the bottom of the zipper.

I can only find a couple of references to the manufacturer on line (The Fedora Lounge.com and John Chapman), and from what I can tell no one is sure wither FLYING EQUIPMENT COMPANY made a limited number of contract jackets or wither they just made spec jackets for commercial sale.

Thanks everybody for throwing in with their opinions and observations... and if anyone knows more about these jackets, or has a picture of a Flying Equipment Co.jacket with a contract number on it, I'd like to know.

Does anyone know what the "Chicago 13" on the label refers too ?

My girlfriend has informed me that I am a flight jacket geek.

Happy New Year,

JC

Check out this original G-1 by Flying Equipment Company..... I just picked it up directly from the USMC pilot who wore it...Great AES-12 and HMX-1 Squadron patches!! It is also named on the inside and a leather name tag found in the pocket!!

The zippers differ according to who made the jacket. Each Manufacturer had their own source; as long as the components of the jacket were up to Mil Spec. My G-1 zipper is by Scovill and Genuine USN in all regards.
