Kration Posted December 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 29, 2010 Here's something you don't see everyday... U.S. Army Escort Wagon.... 1878-1918 Manufactured by the Piedmont Wagon Co. in Hickory N.C. I pulled this out of central Florida this past week and will start on the restoration this spring. Hope to have it finished in time for the MVPA's Dayton Ohio Military Vehicle convention in August Kration
oldfireguy Posted December 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 29, 2010 It looks like it's in pretty good shape now. Good luck with it. Make sure you post some good before and after shots.
hbtcoveralls Posted December 29, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 29, 2010 Very nice, I'm always surprised at how many of these show up. I've seen several at Martin's carriage auction in Pennsylvania and I know of several more in private collections and museums. yours appears to be in exceptional condition. IF you need any parts or if your wheels need help I could probably point you in the right direction, since I'm into horses and carriages. Any chance of a few more photos? Salvage Sailor Posted December 29, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 29, 2010 The Hawaiian Division (24th & 25th ID plus the 8th Artillery, etc) was using wagons similar to this one well into the 1930's. Here's a photo from my collection showing a military review at Schofield Barracks, T.H., circa 1938

Here's a photo from my collection showing a military review at Schofield Barracks, T.H., circa 1938 Great Pic ! Wow... look at all those Escort Wagons ! The Escort's remained in service thru the late 1930's.. and are still listed in the QMC supply catalogs as late as 1944. I'm sure they were still setting on Army Post's unused due to the phase out of Cav forces and changeover to a motorized Army.. Kration
Salvage Sailor Posted December 29, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 29, 2010 Glad to provide some period examples of your wagon in use. Here's an additional photo from the same review. 11th Brigade Pack Train with the 27th Infantry Regiment (Wolfhounds) band in the background. Now you'll just have to make a canvas cover for your wagon restoration
