Does anyone have pic of the true original Navy DSM. In Call of Duty they mention two.

Does anyone have a pic of a general officer or admiral wearing the first "true" navy DSM. The one that has a solid ribbon and not a stripe. Maybe this was not an offical Navy DSM pattern?

When did the USMC and Navy stop wearing the DSM before the Navy cross or the regulation on this>

Any help is greatly appreciated.

4STAR,

As far as I can tell, all of the original DSM's had the gold stripe down the middle. Obviously, I can't be sure, but the medal was authorized in 1917, with the first recipient being Brigadier General Charles A. Doyen, USMC. He received the medal posthumously in 1919. In the Paul Manship collection the Smithsonian has, the medal shown is a split brooch medal dated 1919, and it looks like the current DSM does today.

This is it:

I looked extensively as well, and could not find a solid blue ribbon on a medal or rack. :dunno:

Thanks for the replies.

I have and will find these pics. I just thought someone else may have one or two.

The Navy DSM ribbon is clearly without a stripe and prior to the navy cross.

I will also continue to look for the navy reg placing the DSM before the NC.

Thanks everyone for the input.

From my very limited research, the regulations advancing the Navy Cross before the DSM was in August of 1943.

Found it. Here is a Navy DSM without centerstripe on a USMC BG uniform.

Notice the Haitian medals as well(DSM).

The first ribbon appears longer (wider) than the 2nd ribbon, could be a Gold or Silver Lifesaving medal which had precedence over the Navy Cross at that time, just my observation....

Close up of the admirals ribbon bar. He did not earn the Gold Life Saving Medal. What other medal could supercede the Navy Cross?

During a long and distinguished career which spanned some 46 years, Noble

Irwin was promoted through grades to Rear Admiral on Dec. 2, 1924.

Admiral Irwin earned numerous decorations through the years. Among them:

1898 Battle of Manila Bay Medal (U.S.S. Baltimore)

1908 Philippines Campaign Medal

1908 China Relief Expedition (U.S.S. Monocacy)

1909 Spanish Campaign Medal

1919 Mexican Service Medal

1919 Officer of the Legion of Honor of France "For exceptional service

in organizing conduct of the War (Aeronautics)"

1920 Navy Cross "For exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of

great responsibility as Director of Naval Aviation, in connection with

the development, building, and operation of the Naval Air Service for

war purpose."

1921 Victory Medal (World War Service Medal)

1933 Estrella de Abdon Calderon, First Class, by the Government of

Ecuador "For cordiality and courtesy extended Ecuador - outstanding

instance search made by U.S. Naval Forces for missing Ecuadorean

Schooner 'Plus Ultra' "

Admiral Noble Irwin retired from the Navy on October 1, 1933, completing

some 46 years of service.

If I get a chance in a few weeks I will go by the Navy Dept library and see if there are any better pictures of the Admiral which may answer the question.

Can you also look at USMC BG Richard P. Williams, he is the other officer waring a Navy DSM with no stripe or can you find if this was common practice. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

Authorized on February 4, 1919, the Navy Cross was originally the Navy's 3rd highest award, following the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service medal, given for both combat heroism and other distinguished services. On August 7, 1942 Congress made the Navy Cross a COMBAT ONLY decoration with precedence over the Distinguished Service Medal, making it the Navy's 2nd highest award ranking below only the Medal of Honor. It shares its position with the Army's Distinguished Service Cross and the Air Force Cross.

I recall reading that prior to the change cited above, the Navy Cross took precedence if awarded for valor. I don't know how true that is.

Here is a mini set of the Navy DSM without a centerstripe. I find it interesting that no ones has any information on this version. I have shown it in both full size and mini.

Yet I cannot find one thing on it.

Interesting to say the least. Could this have been an unauthorized version?

Again any help appreciated.

The minis and full size with brevert medal is USMC general George Richards.

The other with the Haitian medal around his neck is USMC BG Richard P. Williams

Seems we have stumped alot on this one.

Thanks

I will see if the museum has either of the originals or has a color photo.

Very interesting. Definitely going to be interesting tracking this one down. One of my goals is to look through the National Archives in to the records from the US Mint and in to the US Antarctic Expedition from 1939-1941

I have tried to document that this is truly a medal that was worn by more than one person yet I have never seen it documented.
