Need help identifying war relics

The aircraft engine appears to be a R 2800 Pratt & Whitney, from what is visible... looks like 9 cylinders in front, so that would suggest 9 more in a back row.

 

The R 1340 also has a circle of 9 cylinders, but they are considerably elongated by comparison and there is no 2nd row.

 

These are the WWII airplanes which could have carried that kind of engine:

CH-37 Mojave

Convair CV-240 family

Curtiss C-46 Commando

Douglas DC-6

F4U Corsair

F6F Hellcat

P-47 Thunderbolt

 

Interesting to see how the safety wiring has held up after so many years!

We hit the jungle again this weekend and worked our way through Naftan Point. This area is the toughest physically to cross. I rate our jungle treks as amatuer, novice, expert and then we came up with a new one - OH MY GOD!! I believe that the ground is fossilized coral and it is the sharpest stuff you could imagine. There are millions of pieces of rocks jumbled together and you have to climb over it. You have to watch every step. Thats the easy part. All of this rock is covered with brush that is extremely thick and 2' to 4' high. At 9 in the morning it felt like it was 100 degrees. The sun beat down from above and then the rocks radiated heat up. On top of that, I got sick. Sweated buckets and vomited several times. My partner and I who are both old enough to be members of AARP decided that this was our last trek on the point.

We did see plenty of hidey holes that were obviously used during WWII. But no artifacts.

So I dont have any found items from this weekend, but I am posting some finds from previous treks, plus more photos of the B-29 engines.

Cave with relics. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this solid concrete pedestal may have been used for? There are some holes in the top, perhaps for mounting something.

Holy smokes, that grenade is as deadly as the day it was made, but it's 70 years corroded. It doesn't care who it maims or kills. That's some bad juju

That old camera is killing me. One of these days i am going to through it in the sea.

I really need a low light camera, but they cost some bucks.
