Supposedly this patch was worn at the battle of Guadalcanal in 1942 according to the seller. Even though I have no verfication, it is still a great rating badge. Before they were known as Corpsman, before Pharmacist, before Steward, they were Apothecaries until 1898. The first rating badge symbol was the Pharmacist symbol until 1898, then came the red Geneva Cross until 1948. Then from 1948 on they went back to using the Pharmacist symbol. This rating existed under the Machinst Mate umbrella with no rating of it's own from 1921-1926, but in 1942 it returned with it's own rating and distinguishing rating badge. The rating itself was founded in 1775, by 1885 it was only in 2nd class PO only until 1893, then it was in first class PO only. Then in 1921 all grades except CPO were added. In 1942 this rating was established for PO3 only, then PO2 in 1943, then PO1 and CPO in 1944. In 1947 this symbol was abolished in favor of the current symbol. Then returned for all grades in 1942-1948. Pilot wings used as rating symbol in both Curved wing and straight wing style during both time periods.
