.50 caliber Tracer & AP 1942.

Recommended Posts

I purchased these two .50 caliber cartridges today at a show. One is headstamped 'RA 42'. The other 'SL 42'. Both are live. My question is about the paint at the tips. Does the paint represent the type of bullet (tracer, ball, armor piercing?)? If so, what?

Thanks!

Kim

Does it look like the bullet in the tracer is original? The reason I ask is the I did not realize that dark ignition tracers(orange)were used that early.

red = bright ignition

orange = dark ignition(also called subdued tracers)

edit these colors for 50 BMG US ammo.

Okay, let me do this again. They both appear to be original untouched examples. And you are right...I rechecked them and the 'orange' tipped one is really 'red', not orange.

oldfireguy, I don't disagree with you rather I thought I would mention that I was a bit hasty on the actual color.
