Leatherwringer Posted November 17, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2010 Got this lighter cover (for a bic) and an original 11 AB patch from a veterans son and I wonder what the story is behind this USN makeup compact
craig_pickrall Posted November 17, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 17, 2010 The USN compact looks similar to this one shown in the 1943 SEARS catalog. They do not list anything other than the USAAF version but I'm sure they were fairly common. The $13 price seems high for that era.

USAFnav Posted November 21, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 21, 2010 Thanks for showing these. If the compact is sterling, it should be so marked. Are there at least maker's marks? Here are a couple of books on Sweetheart Jewelry, with some compacts pictured: Snider, Nicholas D. Antique Sweetheart Jewelry & Collectibles. Atglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 1996. Snider, Nicholas D. Sweetheart Jewelry & Collectibles. Atglen, PA: Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 1995. Both are good books if you want to see examples sweetheart jewelry, but not so good if you are looking for makers information, history, etc. Plus, he consistantly confuses Naval Aviator wings with Army Air Forces Aviator Wings.
