With some research, I may have something to post. Found a named USMC V Amphib Corps uniform recently, and of all the late-war USMC Corporals that match the initials and surname, only two are possibilities based up the unit patch... Both were in African-American units!

In an effort to revive this great thread, I thought I would share my only uniform to an African American - General Colin Powell's uniform in my collection (courtesy of another forum member).

Here's a Flex bail Front Seam M-1 Helmet that was combat damaged by a bullet strike that is named adn serial numbered inside to a Neal Leysath whose NARA Enlistment Records shows race as Negro. Research shows that he served in the regular army starting in 1935 and retired in 1967 as a Sgt. First Class having served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The helmet came with a liner named to another soldier who may have been the one who was wearing it when it was hit as he brought it home and hung it in his garage in MA. He told his son that he had a terrible headache after it happened. You can see where the bullet came in as the shape of it is pushed into the helmet at an angle. I suspect at some point Leysath lost or traded in the helmet shell and the second named man ended up with it but we'll never know.
